Do I need GST registration?

Answer 5 quick questions to find out whether you need a GSTIN in India in 2026. No sign-up.

1. What do you sell?

2. Your annual turnover

3. Do you sell on Amazon, Flipkart, Meesho or any online marketplace?

4. Do you supply goods to customers in other states?

5. Do you export goods or services (foreign clients)?

This is a general guide based on the GST Act, not legal advice. Special-category states have lower thresholds (₹20L goods / ₹10L services). Talk to our CA to confirm your case.

How the thresholds work

GST registration is mandatory once turnover crosses ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services (₹20 lakh / ₹10 lakh in special-category states). It is also compulsory from day one — regardless of turnover — if you sell on e-commerce marketplaces, make inter-state supplies of goods, or are otherwise required to register.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need GST to sell on Amazon or Flipkart?

Yes — from day one, regardless of turnover, because marketplaces are e-commerce operators. See GST for e-commerce sellers.

What is the GST turnover threshold?

₹40 lakh for goods and ₹20 lakh for services (₹20 lakh / ₹10 lakh in special-category states).

Do freelancers and consultants need GST?

Once service turnover crosses ₹20 lakh, or if you export services or a client requires it. See virtual office for freelancers.

Can I register GST with a virtual office?

Yes — a virtual office gives a valid GST address with NOC, Rent Agreement and Utility Bill. See VPOB vs APOB.
