To use Amazon FBA in a state, you need a GSTIN registered there and the fulfilment centre added to it. Here is exactly how that works and how to do it without renting an office.
Amazon FBA (Fulfilment by Amazon) lets you store inventory in Amazon's warehouses and have Amazon pick, pack and ship your orders. The catch most new sellers miss: GST in India is state-wise. The moment your stock sits in an Amazon fulfilment centre in a given state, the law treats that as a place of business in that state — and you need a GST registration there.
That is why sellers expanding across India end up needing GSTINs in multiple states, even though their company is based in just one.
Registering GST in a state where you have no office comes down to two things:
Decide which Amazon fulfilment region you want to stock — e.g. Telangana (Hyderabad), Maharashtra (Mumbai/Pune), Karnataka (Bengaluru) or Haryana (Gurugram). Each is a separate registration.
You receive a verified commercial address in that state with the complete document set the GST officer expects: a notarised No Objection Certificate (NOC), a registered 11-month Rent Agreement and a matching Utility Bill. See the full documents for GST registration.
Your application (REG-01) is filed with the VPOB as the principal place of business. On approval you get your GSTIN and REG-06 certificate for that state.
Once the GSTIN is live, the Amazon fulfilment centre is added to it as an Additional Place of Business via a GST amendment. Here's how APOB is added in the GST portal. Now you can create the shipment and inbound stock.
GST officers can raise a physical verification of the registered address. A credible commercial VPOB — not a residential flat — plus on-ground representation is what gets these cleared smoothly.
The process repeats per state. Sellers commonly start with one or two states near their customers and add more as volume grows. Browse city pages like Hyderabad, Mumbai or Bengaluru to see available addresses.
