Every product you sell needs the right HSN code on its GST invoice. Here's how to find it in seconds — and why getting it wrong costs you money.
An HSN code (Harmonised System of Nomenclature) is a globally standardised number that classifies goods for taxation. In India, your HSN code decides the GST rate that applies to a product — so picking the wrong one means charging the wrong tax, and that creates mismatches the GST department will eventually flag.
The fastest way to get it right is to use our free HSN Code Finder. Type a plain-English product name and it returns the matching HSN code and GST rate, so you can put the correct details on every invoice from day one.
HSN is an international system maintained by the World Customs Organization and used by more than 200 countries. India adopted it for GST so that the same product is classified consistently across the country. The code is hierarchical: the first two digits are the chapter, the next two the heading, and further digits narrow down to the specific product.
| Digits | Meaning | Example (cotton T-shirt) |
|---|---|---|
| First 2 | Chapter (broad category) | 61 — knitted apparel |
| First 4 | Heading | 6109 — T-shirts, singlets |
| First 6 | Sub-heading (global) | 6109.10 — of cotton |
| 8 digits | Tariff item (India) | 6109.10.00 |
The number of digits you must quote depends on your turnover:
If you classify a 12% product under a 5% code, you under-collect tax and become liable for the shortfall plus interest. Classify it too high and you overcharge customers and lose price competitiveness. Persistent mismatches between your invoices and your GSTR-1 summary also raise audit risk. A two-minute check with the finder removes that risk.
Once you know your codes, our Reverse GST Calculator helps you split any MRP into base price and GST, and the full tools page has everything else a seller needs.
