What is a GSTIN and how to read it
Every GST registration has a 15-digit GSTIN. Here's what each part means and how to read yours.
A GSTIN is your 15-digit GST identity in a state. Reading it tells you a lot.
How the 15 digits break down
- Digits 1–2: state code (e.g. 27 = Maharashtra). See the state code list.
- Digits 3–12: the entity's PAN.
- Digit 13: entity/registration number for that PAN in the state.
- Digit 14: default "Z".
- Digit 15: a check digit.
Because digits 1–2 are state-specific, the same business gets a different GSTIN in each state — see multi-state GST.
