How to verify a GSTIN

Before you trust a supplier's invoice — or your buyer's GSTIN — it's worth a 30-second check. Here's how and why.

A GSTIN is a 15-digit number, and not every one quoted on an invoice is valid or active. Verifying protects your input tax credit and your reputation.

How to verify

  1. Use the GST portal's 'Search Taxpayer' by GSTIN.
  2. Check the legal/trade name matches the invoice.
  3. Confirm the status is Active.
  4. Check the registration type and state code.

Why it matters

If a supplier's GSTIN is inactive or their returns aren't filed, your input credit can get stuck. Verify before you rely on the invoice.
